The Municipality of Amaroussion manages all waste materials generated by both residents and jobholders in the city.

More specifically, the Municipalityof Amaroussionmanages:

  • Household waste

With reference to the collection of household waste, a mechanical collection system is applied, using both metal and green plastic bins.

  • Packaging waste

Since 1994 until nowadays a multi-collective recycling programme is realised by the Municipality regarding packaging materials, in cooperation with the Hellenic Recovering Recycling Corporation (HERRCo).

  • Electrical and Electronic Waste, Lamps, Household Batteries, Used cooking oils, Car batteries and Vehicleoils.

For the collection of these types of waste, a series of collection points have been set within the city’s limits, where people can dispose the recycling materials. In case of bulky equipment (e.g household appliances), the Municipality collects the items directly from the deposition point. It is worth mentioning that, the responsible partner recycling companies collect upon notice the relevant recyclable material.

  • Printers and Fax Ink Cartridges

Printers and fax ink cartridges and toners are collected from the municipal services and sent for refilling to collaborating suppliers.

  • End-of-life Vehicles

A contract has been signed with an alternative Vehicle Management company which collects, upon Municipal Police notice, the abandoned vehicles.

The Municipality has a high-density network of green bins: ~3300, whereas at a weekly basis 100 itineraries are being carried out by 18 municipal garbage trucks, collecting household and packaging waste materials. At the same time, around 100 - 120 tn of municipal waste and about 20 tn of household hospital waste are being produced on a daily basis. Moreover, every resident produces 130.000 kg/100.000 inhabitants (per day) = 1.3 kg of daily waste, whilst the above amounts depend on factors such as the following: season (in Amaroussion the quantity of waste decreases during the summer months), national holidays’ mobility, vacations and weekends.

In addition, the Municipality of Amaroussion is one of the first municipalities implementing since 1994 a multi-collective packaging recycling system in cooperation with the HERRCo. Today, the Municipality implements every approved collection and recycling waste system, while it has adopted an environmental management system (ISO 14001:2004). It is worth mentioning that it was the first Municipality on a national scale which was certified by the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), conducting ever since systematic efforts for continuous improvement of its environmental performance.

Towards this direction, the Municipality of Amaroussion participates in recycling programs concerning the following categories:

  • Packaging waste
  • Electrical and Electronic Waste and Lamps
  • Household Batteries
  • Used cooking oils
  • Car batteries, vehicles grace oils and End-of-life Vehicles
  • Printers and Fax Ink Cartridges

Moreover, having set as one of its first priorities the sustainable protection of the environment and the upgrade of the quality of life for its residents and jobholders the Municipality of Amaroussion:

  • Participates in a number of European eco-projects such as: “CASCADE”, “Energy Neighborhoods 2”, “CLEANDRIVE” “PRO-EE”, “PEPESEC”, “IDEMS”, “EnerinTown”, “Sec-Bench”, “Urban Heat Island” etc.
  • Realises a number of recycling and composting programs regarding organic household waste as well as green waste.
  • Has signed the "Covenant of Mayors – Committed to Local Sustainable Energy” Initiative.
  • Organizes environmental awareness campaigns for the inhabitants and students of the city.
  • Participates actively in the implementation of alternative management systems, working in close cooperation with eligible alternative waste management companies operating in our country.

It should be noted that at a time when everyone is talking about recycling, the Municipality of Amaroussion went a step even further by promoting recycling actions of organic materials and by successfully applying until today two home composting programs at a school level:

  • «Composting household waste in the school yard»
  • «Compost from garbages! A youth initiative in both schools and households».
